Generous intake of allium vegetables, such as onion, garlic, leek, and scallion, may reduce the likelihood of gastric cancer.

The objective of this study was to determine the role of allium vegetables in the prevention of stomach cancer. Researchers reviewed 54-year data from 1966 to 2010 from 21 published literatures that examined 543,220 subjects. They observed reduced gastric cancer risk in subjects who ate the most amounts of allium vegetables, particularly onion, garlic, leek, scallion, Chinese chive, garlic stalk, and Welsh onion, compared to those who rarely or did not consume allium vegetables. The findings of this meta-analysis show that high intake of allium vegetables may help to prevent the development of stomach cancer.
