The association between cigarette smoking and risk of colorectal cancer in a large prospective cohort from the United States

Cigarette smoking may precipitate the formation, growth, and spread of cancerous cells and tumors in the colon and rectum.

This study estimated the risk of colorectal cancer based on smoking habits. Researchers charted smoking habits against colorectal cancer prevalence rates in a cohort of 184,187 US men and women.

Researchers recorded a high incidence of colorectal cancer among cigarette smokers in the study population. This study further affirmed that cigarette smoking may fuel the development of colorectal cancer in men and women.
