Associations of red and processed meat intake with screen-detected colorectal lesions
Ardent consumption of red and processed meats may set the stage for the development of colorectal cancer in men and women.
This study evaluated the intake of red and processed meats in relation to the occurrence of lesions in the colon and rectum that herald the onset of colorectal cancer. Researchers looked at the dietary records and colonoscopy screening results of nearly 2,000 Norwegian middle-aged men and women.
Researchers noticed that lesions suggestive of colorectal cancer tend to occur at a high rate among participants on diets rich in red and processed meats. This study indicated that eating ample amounts of red and processed meats consistently may induce the development of cancerous cells and tumors in the colon and rectum.
