Sugar-sweetened and artificially sweetened beverage consumption and risk of type 2 diabetes in men.

A surge in type 2 diabetes risk is associated with high intake of sugar-sweetened and artificial-sweetened beverages in men.

This study evaluated the relationship between the consumption of sugar-sweetened and artificial-sweetened beverages and the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes in men. Using food frequency questionnaires, researchers collated and analyzed data on the sugary beverage consumption rates of 40,386 healthy men recruited from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study. The type 2 diabetes odds ratio of each participant in this study was also assessed.

Researchers found out that a significant elevation in the risk of type 2 diabetes was associated with high intake of sugar-sweetened and artificial-sweetened beverages. The findings of this study indicate that generous consumption of sugar-sweetened and artificial-sweetened beverages may contribute positively to the development of type 2 diabetes in men.
