Dear Dr Carney, my 16 year old daughter is a beta-thalassemia carrier. Even though she is only a carrier she still has some effects which are that her blood cells are smaller meaning she always tests a bit anaemic and she says she is feeling tired. My husband and also a close friend are also carriers and also seem to have the same problem. My daughter eats a whole-food plant based diet rich in greens and beans and whole grains, fruit, nuts and seeds, and absolutely nothing else (no animal products or refined carbs of any kind). She has seen a consultant because of the anaemia and they are recommending she takes an iron supplement. Have you come across this scenario before? What adjustments to my daughter's diet would you recommend - if indeed there is anything that can be done to help her feel less tired given the hereditary condition she has. Thanks
