High intake of cruciferous vegetables reduces the risk of gastrointestinal cancers: results from observational studies

Frequent ingestion of cruciferous vegetables may help thwart the formation of cancerous cells and tumors in the esophagus, stomach, colon, rectum, liver, pancreas, and gallbladder.

This meta-analysis dissected the results of previously published studies that reported the correlation between generous intake of cruciferous vegetables and reduced risk of gastrointestinal cancers. A total of 89 studies met the inclusion criteria for this meta-analysis.

Researchers found a low incidence of cancers affecting the gastro-intestinal systems, including gastric, liver, pancreatic, esophageal, colorectal, and gallbladder cancer, among high consumers of cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli and cabbage. This meta-analysis corroborated the findings of other studies that identified diets rich in cruciferous vegetables as a potent weapon to combat the development of gastro-intestinal cancers.
