I'm Doing Just Fine
So, how are you doing (health-wise) Do you feel good? Unfortunately, that is a hard question to answer, because "feel-good" is relative - and the reference, itself, is variable. This makes the perception of "feel-good" very nebulous. This realization became profoundly evident to me in the early stages of my Type-1 diabetes journey. Even though the onset would be considered abrupt, less than two months from the first hint to near death, the perception of feel-good followed my own reference. Over those two months I became weaker and weaker. After about three weeks I was so weak that getting in or out of a car was exhausting, but I still thought I was OK. I became impressed with people who could run and play sports. I thought they got just as tired as me, but they must have amazing will power. It wasn't until I was found collapsed and barely conscious at my work desk and rushed to the hospital that it registered to me that I was indeed not OK. Within a few months after, as I was getting my blood sugar under control, I felt that I was back to normal - I felt good again. But then, as I progressed with my diabetic logging and tracking and refining my diet, I realized that I came to feel better than any time in my life - realizing that I had never previously truly felt good. I never even knew what "feel-good" felt like. It is like falling in love; where you feel OK, until you fall in love, then you can't imagine how you ever survived without your love.
If you have read any of my blogs, you may notice that I refer to "feel-good" quite often. Well, below is a test devised to help determine just how good you really feel.
The idea for this test has come from many of my family and friends stating that they are healthy and feel good. However, most of them are on several medications, have cardiovascular disease, Type-2 diabetes, etc. and while they often complain of being tired, suffer after dinner sleepies, achy joints and complain about "getting old", they still think they feel good. If mentioned to the younger crowd that what they are eating causes the diseases and life restriction their elders are suffering, they respond with, "I'll change when I get the disease", not realizing that the depth of health debt will be enormous (I'm not talking about monetary debt). But what none of them, older or younger, realizes is the level of feel-good that is possible and how powerfully they would love it if they ever felt it.
To take this test, you must be absolutely honest. To help ensure honesty, do not reveal your answer to anyone. Keep it entirely to yourself. The intent is to remove any self-conscious bias.
OK, now on with the test...
Below are pictures of different activities. Look through them and pick the one that tugs at your heart the strongest - the one that you would feel the most elated to do. I don't mean one that you "wish" you could do or think you should do, but the one that you would do if you were there and free to do it. Not related to skill level, social conformance (having fun with friends), ego or competition. Just because of the pure, exclusive joy of life it makes you feel.
If your score is less than 5, you might be suffering from Insulin Resistance. An easy fix to change Insulin Resistance to Insulin Sensitive is to simply remove all animal based foods and any food items with a total fat content greater than 10%; a Whole Foods Plant Based Low Fat lifestyle.
