Whole-grain and blood lipid changes in apparently healthy adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled studies.

Adequate intake of whole grains may help individuals to improve their lipid profile and maintain a healthy cholesterol number.

This study investigated the association between frequent consumption of whole grains and serum concentrations of lipids in healthy adults using a meta-analytic approach. Data extracted from 24 studies were analyzed for this study.

The team of investigators observed reduced blood levels of total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in subjects on diets high in whole grains compared to individuals who rarely consumed whole grains. Among the different types of whole grains, oats were found to have the greatest cholesterol-lowering effect in this study. However, increased consumption of whole grains had no effect on plasma concentrations of high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and triglycerides. The results of this study support the hypothesis that generous intake of whole grains may help individuals to maintain their cholesterol levels within the healthy range.
