In addition to improving the glycemic and lipid profile of diabetics, vegetarian diets may also help to reduce type 2 diabetes risk significantly.

This study examined the role of whole-food plant-based diets play in the prevention and management of type 2 diabetes. Researchers reviewed data and evidence obtained from several observational studies and clinical trials.

The team of investigators found out that individuals on vegetarian diets had 50% lower chances of developing type 2 diabetes than non-vegetarians. In addition, low-fat, vegan diets were also found to enhance glycemic control, improve plasma lipid profile, and reverse atherosclerosis progression in this study. The findings of this study show that diets rich in plant-based foods and low in fat may contribute positively to the prevention and management of type 2 diabetes.
