Increased intake of fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of developing lung cancer among high-risk individuals, such as miners.

This study investigated the relationship between the consumption of fruits and vegetables and lung cancer development risk. Using validated dietary questionnaires, researchers examined the fruit and vegetable intake of 183 tin miners in the Yunnan province of China. The lung cancer odds ratio of each of the participant in this study was also determined.

Researchers observed that subjects who regularly consumed large servings of fruits and vegetables, such as tomatoes and green vegetables, had lower risk of developing lung cancer than those with low fruit and vegetable consumption rate. The findings of this study reveal that generous consumption of fruits and vegetables may decrease the incidence of lung cancer among individuals working in the mining industry.
