This study investigated the association between cigarette smoking and the likelihood of developing age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Researchers conducted a meticulous meta-analysis on data extracted from 5 prospective cohort and 8 case-control studies.
The research team found a significant elevation in the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration among cigarette smokers. The likelihood of suffering from age-related macular degeneration was found to be higher in current smokers than in previous smokers. The results of this meta-analysis suggest that cigarette smoking may contribute positively to the development of age-related macular degeneration.
