Former and current cigarette smokers may have a high tendency of suffering from acute pancreatitis.

The purpose of this research work was to review previously published studies that investigated the role of cigarette smoking in the development of acute pancreatitis. In this meta-analysis, 5 studies that evaluated the relationship between tobacco smoking and acute pancreatitis risk were reviewed.

Researchers found out that cigarette smoking raised the odds of acquiring acute pancreatitis. "Both current and former smoking are associated with increased risk for acute pancreatitis.," concluded the authors of this study.
