High dietary intake of nuts, such as peanuts, may decrease cardiovascular and total mortality risk.

This study evaluated the correlation between frequent consumption of nuts, particularly peanuts, and mortality risk. Researchers monitored the death records and analyzed the dietary data of 206,029 subjects recruited from the Shanghai’s Men Health Study, the Shanghai’s Women Health Study, and the Southern Community Cohort Study. They observed that subjects who regularly consumed nuts, especially peanuts, had slim chances of dying from cardiovascular diseases and other causes. The results of this study support the hypothesis that a substantial reduction in the incidence of deaths due to chronic diseases can be achieved through progressive increase in the rate of consumption of nuts.
