Type 2 diabetes is more likely to occur in statin-treated patients than in non-statin users.

This study was carried out to determine the relationship between statin intake and the incidence of new onset diabetes mellitus (NODM). Researchers examined the medical data of 156,360 subjects recruited from the Korean National Health Insurance Scheme. They observed that subjects on statins had a 3% higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes than non-statin users. The results of this study support the hypothesis that statins may ha diabetogenic effect on humans.
