Effects of dietary fiber type on blood pressure: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials of healthy individuals.

​Eating generous portions of fiber-rich foods regularly may help to lower high blood pressure.

The aim of this meta-analysis was to investigate whether an association exists between the intake of fiber-rich foods and high blood pressure risk in healthy individuals. Researchers analyzed data from 28 randomized controlled trials that examined the effect of fiber-rich foods on systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

Researchers discovered that high intake of foods rich in dietary fiber, especially beta-glucan containing foods such as oats and barley, caused a significant reduction in both diastolic and systolic blood pressure values. The findings of this study suggest that following a high-fiber diet may help to maintain an individual's blood pressure within the healthy range.
