Diet, vegetarianism, and cataract risk.

Vegetarians are less likely to develop cataracts than frequent consumers of meat and fish.

This study evaluated the role of diet in the prevention of cataracts. Researchers analyzed the diets and cataract odds ratio of 27,670 non-diabetic subjects who were all above 40 years. They found out that subjects on vegetarian diets had the lowest risk of developing cataract compared to low-meat eaters, high-meat eaters, and fish-eaters. The findings of this study suggest that consistent consumption of vegetarian diets may confer significant protection against the development of cataracts.
