Association of smoking with the risk of incident atrial fibrillation: A meta-analysis of prospective studies.

Cigarette smoking can trigger the onset of atrial fibrillation.

This study investigated the smoking-atrial fibrillation connection using a meta-analytic approach. A team of Chinese researchers collated and analyzed data from 16 studies that examined 286,217 subjects and 11,787 cases of atrial fibrillation.

The research team found a high incidence of atrial fibrillation among cigarette smokers. Evidence from this study suggest that cigarette smoking may significantly increase the risk of atrial fibrillation.
