Association between dietary whole grain intake and risk of mortality.

Increased whole grain consumption may reduce total and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality risks in patients.

This research work was carried out to determine the relationship between whole grain consumption and mortality risk. 118085 cancer- and cardiovascular disease-free patents in the United States (74341 women from 1984-2010 Nurses Health Study and 43744 men from 1986-2010 Health Professionals Follow-Up Study) were studied for years. Using validated food frequency questionnaires, researchers monitored the diets of all the subjects. The total, cancer, and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality hazard ratios of all the patients were also measured.

Researchers found out that total and CVD mortalities were low in patients who consumed large quantities of whole grains. However, high whole grain intake had no effect on cancer mortality. This study re-enforces the popular belief that increased whole grain consumption helps to reduce the risk of developing major chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
