Habitual intake of antioxidant vitamin and mineral supplements may not reduce an individual's chances of suffering from age-related macular degeneration.

This study investigated the correlation between the consumption of antioxidant vitamin and mineral supplements and the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration (AMD). A team of researchers from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine looked at data on the antioxidant vitamin and mineral supplement intake levels of 62,520 subjects and also estimated the age-related macular degeneration hazard ratio of each participant in this study. The researchers discovered that high intake of antioxidant vitamin and mineral supplements did not reduce the likelihood of developing age-related macular degeneration. The results of this study suggest that supplementation with antioxidant vitamins and minerals may not protect individuals from age-related macular degeneration.
