Diets rich in allium vegetables, such as onions and garlic, may confer significant protection against gastric cancer.

This study investigated the relationship between the consumption of allium vegetables, such as garlic and onions, and the occurrence of stomach cancer. Researchers reviewed data on the gastric cancer odds ratios and onions and garlic consumption levels of thousands of subjects obtained from 23 case-control studies and 4 cohort studies. They observed a low prevalence of stomach cancer among frequent consumers of allium vegetables, such as onions and garlic. The findings of this meta-analysis suggest that high intake of allium vegetables may contribute positively to the prevention of gastric cancer.
