Alcohol consumption and risk of atrial fibrillation: a prospective study and dose-response meta-analysis.

Moderate and heavy alcohol drinkers may have a high tendency of developing atrial fibrillation.

This study was carried out to evaluate alcohol consumption in relation to the development of atrial fibrillation. Using validated questionnaires, researchers from Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden, collected and analyzed data on the alcohol intake of 79,019 men and women with no previous history of atrial fibrillation. The atrial fibrillation odds ratios of all the participants in this study were also ascertained.

Researchers discovered that subjects who reported consuming moderate and high amounts of alcohol had greater risk of developing atrial fibrillation than individuals who were non-drinkers. Data from this study suggest that moderate and heavy consumption of alcoholic drinks may put individuals at high risk of developing atrial fibrillation.
