Vitals are taken and blood is drawn on all participants twice during the week. The first time is on Sunday morning and the second time is on the following Friday morning. The picture here shows a table set up with two draw stations, one at either end. In order to process 132 participants in as close to a two hour window as possible we had to set up four tables with eight draw stations. We also had other rooms where the participants had their blood pressure and weight recorded before coming into this room for the blood draws. We have had a few immersions to work out the details and the system just keeps getting better and better.
The blood drawing room is later transformed into a group medical appointments room by moving the tables to the room edges and bringing in three dozen portable chairs. At these group appointments the participants hear a short lecture from Dr. Carney and are then seen privately, one at a time, in a screened off consultation room that we set up with our massage table and with privacy partitions that we brought from the office.
During the group visit we also lecture the participants while Dr. Carney is doing her one on one visits. For the first visit Sean, Dr. Carney's husband, shares techniques used in the Carney household for preparing food in a fast and simple way to ensure that there is always plenty of food. The participants enjoy this although the following two group appointments were made extra special by the presence of honored guests! Caldwell Esselstyn Jr. MD did a question and answer session at the second group visit. The third visit will have special guest, Jeff Novick MS, RD, LD, LN.
Setting up the Medical Clinic at the Engine 2 Immersion programs is a significant technical challenge due to the need to be connected from the Immersion to the AllMedPhysicians, pLLC network. This is needed in order to utilize our Electronic Medical Records and also our File Sharing. Fortunately for us the Travaasa Resort Hotel is very well equipped to handle such needs and actually provided a completely separate and dedicated high speed Internet connection that we were able to use. We brought three workstations from the exam rooms, a tablet and a laptop. We also brought a router that connects automatically to the office router and creates a Virtual Private Network with our office.
Our staff are able to work from these workstations at the resort office almost as conveniently as if they were at their own desks at the AllMedPhysicians, pLLC office. This also enables Dr. Carney to monitor issues at the AllMedPhysicians office and take care of patient requests that have been coming into the office during the week.
It is a challenge to close up the office for a full week at a time!
